Glass
Wall Sculpture by Rick Mills
Dedicated at Maui Memorial Medical Center
The
SFCA held a dedication for a glass wall sculpture
by Rick Mills at Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC)
in Wailuku on July 26th. The sculpture, entitled Healing
Waters, was commissioned by the SFCA Art in
Public Places Program.
According
to Mills, “Layers of transparent colored glass
wash the viewer in soothing light. Much like water
flows over a waterfall, Healing Waters is
intended to invoke a sense of awe and comfort in the
viewer. Water, the omniscient fluid for life, is used
as a visual metaphor for its life sustaining and healing
properties."
Mills
was born and raised in Marion, Ohio and has lived in
Hawai‘i since 1981. He received a Bachelor of
Fine Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1980
and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University
of Hawai‘i at Manoa in 1986, where he is a Professor
of Art. His work has been exhibited at International
Glass, Kanazawa, Japan; Crossings, France-Hawai‘i;
and solo exhibitions at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu;
Friesen Gallery, Seattle, Washington; and the Museum
of Northwest Art, La Conner, Washington.
Mills
has completed large glass wall sculptures commissioned
by the SFCA Art in Public Places Program for the Hawai‘i
Convention Center and Leilehua High School in Wahiawa;
the latter was part of the SFCA’s Artists in
Residence Program. His sculptures and blown glass are
in numerous private and public collections including
the SFCA; Glasmuseum, Ebeltoft, Denmark; and the Royal
College of Art, London, England. |
